90 Seconds with Andrew: One Careful, Sustainable Step at a Time
posted by MVI | Oct 24 2016 - 2:44pm

The first principle of the Model is that sustaining gain is more important than speed. You move one careful, sustainable step at a time. Click here to see Andrew's 90-second example of this principle.

Do Compensation Systems Work in Hospice?
posted by MVI | Aug 11 2015 - 1:25pm

An organization’s compensation systems are the most POWEFUL tools to shape behavior and create healthy and happy Hospice cultures. However, most leaders can’t get past the “fear barrier.” Therefore, only the elite of our movement use them insightfully to create fair and rewarding systems…systems that make management vastly easier because they are STRUCTURAL and do not rely on the personal inspection of work that can ebb with energy levels and the constraints of time. Accountability can be “fine-tuned” with a great compensation system.

People Development and The Model
posted by MVI | Mar 18 2015 - 1:59pm

The People Development & The Model Program is perhaps the most important of all MVI Tough Trainings, because it has such large scale implications.

An organization can be no more or less than the quality of its People Development system.

The CEO must have the clearest vision of all leaders regarding this paradigm shift if a Hospice is to really move to the 90th percentile.  A Hospice can only compete on the basis of quality, and quality only comes from People Development. Is your People Development system what it needs to be?

Let’s Get Serious About Money and Profitability!!!
posted by MVI | Nov 6 2013 - 1:12pm

Money moves the human world. It drives an enormous amount of human behavior. It is often the determining factor in whether we do or don’t do something. Money translates into capacity and the drive for life derived from the survival instinct. Money is highly, highly emotional… We want to “feel” we have enough nuts stored away. This applies to nearly everyone.

BEST PRATICES... Are Never What the Masses Do
posted by MVI | Sep 30 2013 - 10:22am

It seems that someone is always trying to sell something. I grow weary of it…unless it is something I need. May God strike down MVI if we ever sell something to a hospice that is not needed! HOWEVER, as a leader, whether a CEO, CFO, Clinical Leader or any other asset manager, you are constantly selling ideas. I sell ideas hard if I am convinced the direction is more than marginally beneficial. That’s my job. It’s your job too. In fact, it is the 1st Duty of a leader.

MCOs and ACOs Love the Model!
posted by MVI | Aug 12 2013 - 11:22am

An interesting trend is occurring with MCOs (Managed Care Organizations) and ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations) and their relationships with hospices. Many are choosing to partner with hospices that do the Model over those that don’t. My jaw has dropped repeatedly since the end of 2012 and throughout this year as I witness hospices using the Model to sell value to strategic partners. This means that many MVI clients are poised well! Yea!

Sequestration Effects - Hospice Darwinism
posted by MVI | Aug 12 2013 - 11:09am

Those who adapt survive.
For years Andrew’s Hospice CFO training course has contained the following exam question: “When Medicare cuts hospice rates, what three things will happen?” Hospice visionaries and pioneers are not surprised by cuts to Medicare reimbursements. Nor are they alarmed. Good hospices will adjust their models and continue to provide stellar care and build reserves. Lesser hospices will limp through. Some will fail.

The Heck with the Middle! Become an OUTLIER!
posted by MVI | Aug 12 2013 - 10:49am

Are you an outlier? Though this term can carry a negative connotation in the reimbursement and regulatory worlds, here we are viewing it positively. It is an interesting topic to contemplate. Secretly, most individuals seek differentiation and want to be recognized, at least according to Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. Or we could cite Frankel in that we all seek meaning and purpose in our lives and would like to accomplish something noble and good.

How Deep is Your Model?
posted by MVI | Jun 1 2012 - 12:00am

As I look across the hospice landscape as it relates to the “Model”, I believe there are many entities that think they are “doing the Model” when in fact, the implementation is quite shallow. I do not say this in order to make anyone feel bad about their progress (we are ALL making progress!), but rather because I care and feel quite responsible. I also judge MVI’s performance to a large degree on this ideal. I realize that important new discoveries regarding the Model are being recognized and assimilated daily. This innovation makes it exciting, but it also out-dates materials quickly.
