The Model and Home Health
There are huge Home Health providers as well as entire health systems that are translating the Model to their operations. I am a bit surprised at the magnitude, but really shouldn’t be. The concepts are grounded in the concrete world and the realities of human behavior…and the economic results speak for themselves. Now to be clear, MVI’s primary focus is Hospice Management. The fact that larger health systems have recognized the benefits of the Model is simply a nice by-product…it is not an intention. I think an organization must choose what it is going to be extraordinary at…and the idea of MORE must be fought daily in order to have laser-beam focus on what is important.
Why are Home Health and large healthcare systems doing the Model? It’s pretty simple.
- People Development – It is the Center of the Universe! We have a lot of firepower in how to 1) Attract, 2) Select, 3) Develop and 4) Retain talented people. It is a SYSTEM…a people system that can be translated to tens of thousands of employees to create a high-quality, predictable experience. It is the #1, numero uno aspect of the Model. All organizations are filled with people. People are the basis of everything.
- Visit Design & Phone Interaction Design – Meticulous attention to the care experience is the “beginning of the Model” – by placing ourselves in the patient/family seat and “caring enough” to consider everything in the experience – every word/phrase, color, smell and action. The structures are created to make that experience happen for every patient, every time, every patient, every time through the formation of habits, the basis of all human behavior. Visits and Phone Interactions are done in nearly every healthcare setting. So the concepts DIRECTLY apply.
- Standards – The basis of all People Development and Accountability. The creation of Clear, Impressive and Sustainable Standards is a basic requirement of all world-class organizations. The Model, especially over the past 2 years has taken the implementation of Standards to near art form. We hit this hard in the 1-day Model Re-Sync program.
- Compensation – The most powerful structural tool available to organizations. The biggest moves with the greatest impact on your organization’s performance will result from movements of Talent and the Compensation of that Talent. All organizations should be interested in using it and get beyond the “fear barrier” that holds the majority back. The comp systems for Hospice work REALLY well for Home Heath and are, in fact, easier.
The detail and minutia is where an organization separates itself from the generalists. I am obsessed with the details of the experience…and how to organize an experience predictably. All businesses need this, whether they realize it or not. However, the details are where you have to choose the industry or type of business that you will obsess about. MVI’s is Hospice…and if other flavors of healthcare like it and use it…that is fine…but it is not our objective.
